How to calculate markup
Markup is the profit as a share of the cost: markup = (price − cost) ÷ cost × 100.
To get the selling price from a markup: price = cost × (1 + markup). A 50% markup on a $40 cost gives a price of $60.
Markup vs margin
Markup is calculated on the cost and margin on the price, so the same profit gives a higher markup than margin. Convert between them with margin = markup ÷ (1 + markup) and markup = margin ÷ (1 − margin). A 100% markup is a 50% margin.
